For the Birds

Sarah: Here is a good question. Birdhouses and birdbaths. Whats up with that? Why did we decide its normal and ok to not only feed birds, but to encourage their presence. Imagine that with another animal . . . doghouses, not for a pet but just extra dog houses with dog food sitting on your front lawn, encouraging all the stray dogs to come and eat out of it. People would come by and say "wow you have a lot of dogs at your dog house today, nice!" and big huge piles of dog poop would be everywhere but whatever, thats cool, nobody cares. But no, we dont do that with dogs, cats, mice, rabbits (i have a lot of wild rabbits that live in my yard), moles . . . just birds, and everything else we spend time and money investing in fences and repellent to get rid of. Why birds??"

Personally I think the trend of birdhouse started back in the day when people ate birds. The little birdhouses were really traps however once Safeways opened and people realized it was much more convenient to buy chicken than eat finches. I do wonder when the little birdies turned too cute to kill and devour!
